Everything you need to track business mileage and claim from HMRC
KeptMiles uses GPS and Android's activity recognition to detect when you're driving. It starts recording automatically when you get in your vehicle and stops when you arrive. No buttons to press, no app to open. Just drive and your miles are tracked.
The GPS adapts to your battery level: high accuracy when charging, balanced during the day, and battery-saving when power is low. All-day tracking without draining your phone.
Most mileage trackers apply a flat rate and call it done. HMRC's rules aren't that simple. The first 10,000 business miles in a tax year are at 45p, and everything after that drops to 25p.
KeptMiles handles this correctly, including journeys that straddle the threshold. If your 10,000th mile falls in the middle of a journey, the app splits the claim: part at 45p, part at 25p. It also supports motorcycles (24p) and bicycles (20p).
Every journey needs classifying as business, personal, or commute. KeptMiles makes this fast: swipe right for business, left for personal, or tap to choose. Long-press to select multiple journeys and classify them all at once.
Set up saved locations for places you visit regularly, like your workshop, client sites, or home. Journeys ending at saved locations are classified automatically.
Your dashboard shows the full picture at a glance: total business miles, running claim amount, and a progress bar showing how close you are to the 10,000-mile threshold. It updates in real time as journeys are recorded and classified.
The Stats screen adds monthly breakdowns with a bar chart, year-end claim predictions, and quick access to PDF/CSV export.
Generate professional mileage reports ready for your accountant or MTD software. The PDF includes a summary page with your details, vehicle info, mileage breakdown by classification, rate tiers, and total claim, followed by a detailed journey log with dates, addresses, distances, and amounts.
The CSV export gives you raw data in a spreadsheet-friendly format for further analysis or import into accounting software.
Every journey is drawn on an interactive OpenStreetMap, colour-coded by classification. Tap to expand to full screen, then open the playback controls to replay your journey with smooth animation.
The playback panel shows live stats as the marker moves: speed, cumulative distance, compass bearing, elapsed time, and a 24-hour clock. Adjust speed from real-time to 100x, step through frame by frame, or drag the scrubber to any point. Browse between journeys without closing the map.
Browse your journeys in month or week view, with coloured dots marking each day's trips by classification. Filter to show only business, personal, or commute journeys. Tap any day to jump straight to its journey list, useful for quickly checking what you drove on a specific date or spotting gaps in your records.
Short stops at traffic lights or petrol stations can split what should be one continuous trip into two separate journeys. When KeptMiles detects two journeys close together in time and location, it suggests merging them. Tap to combine them into a single journey with the correct total distance.
It's easy to let unclassified journeys pile up. KeptMiles sends periodic notifications reminding you to classify outstanding trips, so nothing slips through the cracks at tax year end. A few taps each evening is all it takes.
Back up your entire mileage database to Google Drive with a single tap. Automatic periodic backups run in the background so your records are always protected. Switching phones or had to reset your device? Restore your full journey history from Google Drive and carry on where you left off.
Sometimes tracking isn't running. Perhaps you borrowed someone else's car, or your phone was off. Manual entry lets you add those journeys after the fact. Type the start and end addresses and KeptMiles geocodes them and calculates the road-following distance for you. Or enter the mileage yourself if you already know it. Either way, the journey is included in your claim totals just like any automatically tracked trip.
Need past data for a tax return but don't want an ongoing subscription? Unlock individual months with a one-off purchase. Each unlock is permanent: once bought, that month's journeys are yours to view and export whenever you need them. Handy for Self Assessment season when you only need a few specific months.
Accidentally deleted a journey? It's not gone. Deleted journeys move to the recycle bin first, where you can review and restore them at any time. When you're certain you no longer need them, permanently delete from the bin. A safety net for busy classification sessions.
After 5th April 2027 (end of 26/27 tax year), KeptMiles stays free to use. Premium removes limits and adds extras.
